Connection Between Thyroid and Smoking

The habit of smoking is unhealthy, however, it is said to reduce the amounts of thyroid antibodies in the body thus suppressing immune system attacks on the thyroid gland. Despite its negative impact on health, those who quit smoking could be at a higher risk of getting Hashimoto’s disease which is a condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Those people may begin experiencing anxiety attacks, panic attacks, irritability and some gain weight and as a result they should go for clinical checkups.

In the past, anatabine supplement was available for people who had high levels of thyroid antibodies. Anatabine is a compound found in cigarettes and is thought to reduce the rates of thyroid antibodies though it’s no longer in the market and it could now be made into a drug.

Since smoking is harmful to one’s health, the following recommendations are useful especially to patients with thyroid disorders, mental disorders such as schizophrenia who smoke to feel better.

  • Lifestyle modification. One can follow lifestyle interventions to quit smoking.
  • Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga
  • Avoid stress. Just like any other health condition, patients with thyroid disease should avoid stress.
