The Gene Factor
Most of the people have predisposed genes to autoimmune conditions. In as much as genes play a role, there are other triggers to the condition, as there is intestinal permeability.
Leaky Gut Factor
The immune system is responsible for maturing and training the gut. Therefore, when there is a gut breakdown, the immune cells are not properly maturing making them unable to correctly recognize the cells. This makes it difficult to differentiate between the body and the triggers.
Every person suffering from Hashimoto`s has a leaky gut component. It may be constipation or bloating, IBS, acid reflux, and it may present itself as a silent issue. Gut function is critical to other body functioning majorly the functioning of the thyroid. After about a decade of experiencing the above symptoms of leaky gut, the patients are then diagnosed with Hashimoto`s.
Leaky gut is caused by food reactions. One should however consider the balance of bad bacteria Vs food in the gut (dysbiosis). Taking probiotics and eating fermented food has proven to be useful in this situation.
One should look at food sensitivities as they try to get their gut under control. This includes which foods lead to inflammation of their gut. In Hashimoto`s, the major causes are products such as; diary, soy and gluten. It is recommended to shift one’s focus on the liver after which they can now concentrate on their gut and adrenals.
When people have the leaky gut factor, their bodies begin reacting to the food that they eat and may result in body inflammation after it has been digested and has been absorbed by the system. This leads to attack of anything that resembles the ingested food.
Gluten`s structure resembles that of the thyroid gland, thus when having a leaky gut and one begins consuming gluten, it will be attacked and so will the thyroid gland.
The same happens to someone with the great imitator, celiac disease. When one suffers from this condition and consumes gluten, it is considered as a foreign substance by the body hence the body responds by attacking the gluten.
There is an article that looks into intervention of people with Hashimoto as well as celiac disease. The people tried a gluten free meal and as a result, 23% of them after three months were able to return to their normal thyroid functioning by doing away with their thyroid antibodies.
A survey conducted shows that of the people with Hashimotos’, 80% feel better with elimination of dairy from their diet. Moreover, diary acts as a trigger for type I diabetes.
Soy remains the main trigger in Hashimoto`s and is also known to lead to inflammation. It can be simply thought of as a thyroid`s poison. It should be done away with just like diary and gluten. Other triggers include; grains, eggs, and nightshades.
Testing Food Sensitivities
One can test food sensitivities in a lab or read on blogs on how to go about it. However it is recommended that they try and eliminate certain foods from their diet. For some, elimination works quite well and reverses their condition.
Nutritional deficiencies are also capable of causing leaky gut. Omega 3, zinc, glutamine are recommended. The above can help a patient in healing their gut. When one’s body is deficient of zinc, their body will be unable to convert T4 to T3.
Selenium supplements help in reduction of thyroid antibodies that has proven useful in terms of fatigues, anxiety and hair loss.
With hypothyroidism, a person’s body is not absorbing food nutrients properly and they should consume iron or otherwise the body will seek iron from other places that usually is the cause for hair loss.
Impaired ability to handle stress
Stress has been a trigger, and when let go helps reverse the condition 100%. Stress can be also as a result of the food people eat; they should look at their diet and balance their sugars.
