Back again I see! Looking for more simple and natural means to bolster your health? Well look no further because here at the Functional Cure blog we are always on the hunt for the means to make our lives better and healthier. Last time we talked about the paleo diet and all the benefits that come from a dialed back diet. This time we are going to look at something to add into your diet that can do you a world of good: probiotics.
Probiotics are live yeasts and bacteria that are good for you gut health. Thinking that bacteria is a bad word? While it is true, there are plenty of illness causing bacteria, our bodies are naturally host to tons of bacteria both helpful and harmful. Probiotics are heaping doses of beneficial bacteria that can benefit your digestive system in many ways.
Found in supplements or in many foods, getting probiotics can bring balance back to your bacteria, keeping your body working like it is supposed to. Due to any number of reasons, medications such as antibiotics for an example, your body’s natural levels of bacteria can be ravaged. Without properly bringing them back to balance you can experience a wide range of symptoms.
Some common probiotics are:
- Lactobacillus – Perhaps the most common probiotic, found in fermented foods such as yogurt. These can help with people who are unable to digest lactose.
- Bifidobacterium – Also found in dairy products, Bifidobacterium can ease symptoms of IBS.
Both are beneficial to conditions that afflict the digestive tract, and for obvious reason. The ingesting of these probiotics put the helpful bacteria right where they need to be, in our stomachs, intestines, all throughout the digestive system.
Gut health is incredibly important when it comes to our overall health. After all, the digestive system is how we take in and absorb all other nutrients our body’s need to operate efficiently and healthily. Think of it like an assembly line. The digestive tract is the conveyor belt on which all the pieces are maneuvered through the factory (your body). If the conveyor belt is missing gears, or moving along at an improper speed, the factory won’t be able to create the correct outputs of energy. Alright that analogy may have gotten a little away from us but you understand.
Probiotics can be an incredibly useful tool in keeping your body healthy, so go grab yourself a bottle of kombucha and drink up! Watch out, it smells!
